in 2017, while studying fine art at the Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Art, i lived in a building without composting infrastructure. in response to this, i began dehydrating the peels of my food - onion tops, banana and orange peels, garlic stems, pits, used bay leaves - and dehydrating them in my oven. i then began experimenting with these materials to honour them as objects in existence, rather than the discards, rejects, compostable remains of delicious foods. i used them as materials for sculpture and installation pieces. unfortunately the photos from these 2017-2018 projects have been lost, however i continued this work while living in Montréal, QC. between fall 2021 and spring 2022 i explored this mild obsession more. i created a meal installation (project 1), a banner reading "the smallest ugliest most precious things" (project 2), a short film exploring this persona of mine and made puppets (project 3), a recipe for cooking with peels (project 4), and another meal installation with instructions for participation and interaction with the peels (project 5).
